TRAVEL TIPS

Car Travel

Fairly good roads connect Mumbai to most major cities and tourist areas. Hiring a car and driver gives you a chance to watch the often-beautiful surroundings whiz by. Note that the driving can also be loud, hair-raising, and is definitely less than time-efficient for long distances.

Some distances from Mumbai: Aurangabad 388 km (241 miles); Panaji (Goa) 597 km (371 miles); Delhi 1,408 km (875 miles); Kochi (Kerala) 1,384 km (860 miles).

Cars and Drivers

In certain areas, such as bazaars, you really have to walk for the full experience. Aside from these, having a car at your disposal is the most convenient way to travel around Mumbai, as you can zip (or crawl, depending on the time of day) around town without the repeated hassle of hailing taxis and haggling over fares. To arrange a hired car, inquire at your hotel's travel desk or contact a travel agency (you'll probably pay much more if you book through your hotel). You'll get lower rates from private agents like Adarsh, Euro Cars, or Travel House: Rs. 1,800 to Rs. 2,000 for a full day (8 hours, or 80 km [50 miles]) in a car (Uno or Indica; small cars) with air-conditioning, and Rs. 1,700 or more for an air-conditioned sedan car like a Maruti Esteem. Rates go up for Toyotas, Mercedes, and other luxury cars.
