What the Area is Known For
Terceira boasts a rich tapestry of culture and natural beauty that captivates every traveler. This island uniquely combines history, nature, and an intangible spirit. You can wander through the historic center of Angra do Heroísmo, a UNESCO World Heritage Site where cobbled streets and charming architecture whisper tales of its past. The beautiful sidewalks are inlaid with amazing designs. Our group visited the fort overlooking the protected bay which gave the city of Angra its name. The views were spectacular, and we finished the day with an unbelievable sunset!
The essence of Terceira’s history is also woven into its celebrated wine-making tradition, with vineyards that tell the story of the island’s volcanic soul. Then of course, we had to try the cheese and it was fantastic- mild and so good! And the group enjoyed lunch at a local restaurant where we had a traditional meal of rice with oxtail which melted in your mouth.
On to the protected natural swimming pool next to the very active ocean! Lots more nature in the afternoon and a walk through the town center. These trails offer views that are nothing short of breathtaking, where the land meets the boundless Atlantic Ocean. Whether you’re diving into the azure waters of the island’s surprising swimming spots or simply basking in their geological splendor, Terceira promises an experience unlike any other.
While the lush green landscapes are reminiscent of the Irish countryside, with patchwork fields and a charming cow population nearly doubling that of its human residents, adventure seekers find solace in Terceira’s numerous hiking trails. Did you know: Dairy farming, fishing, and tourism are their top industries? Fifteen years ago, this island produced 30% of Europe’s milk, so they have happy cows here!

Things to Do While in Terceira
Hiking, snorkeling, scuba diving, and whale watching are perfect for travelers from May to September.
Plus on the east side, there are only two places in the world where you can go into caves in a volcano, here and in Iceland. Trust me, this is an unbelievable experience – the beauty is over the top!
We visited another “beach” area during our trip, and enjoyed another traditional lunch served by the people of the town in the community center. That was so special, and the food was so good. You simply can’t get enough of the local flavor! Follow your meal with a little shopping to burn off some calories and then head back to your hotel to get ready a nice dinner and a memorable night of culinary cuisine.
